Employers can require workers to spend time at the office from dawn to dusk but the human mind-body simply isn't productive for more than like 4 hours. This is why crunch culture doesn't translate to productivity. But employers will just do a massive layoff to please shareholders then hire AI to do all the work 24/7 and then go bankrupt because no one has money to buy the product/service. Terry Pratchett wrote a great book about this topic!
I can't remember the title but it's one of his many Discworld books where he uses Golems as analogy to robots. Even though his overall view of them in the books is positive, he pointed out that if Ankh-Morpork suddenly got an army of them, the citizens would end up jobless beggars, and other nations would perceive Ankh-Morpork as an immediate threat due to the golem arsenal. So the solution is the state literally buries most of it but keeps some for transport, police and fire departments.
I made a short film which you may enjoy, about this companies trying to get workers back to the office.

Which Pratchett book is that? Is it part of the Disc World series?
